Edith
Edith Eleanor Thiel
Nov. 15, 1930 - Nov. 6, 2024
1930
2024
Edith passed away suddenly on November 6, 2024 leaving a huge void in the lives of those who loved her deeply including her loving husband of 72 years, Walter Thiel, her two daughters Debbie Thiel and Carol Tweten, and her two precious grandchildren Taya Tweten and Tayt Tweten.
Edith loved her family and friends and made them the center of her life. She was steadfast in her love for Walter and was interested in his many activities and proud of his accomplishments. She was a dedicated mother who was always there for her two daughters, teaching them by example and encouraging and supporting them in all aspects of their lives. She was an amazing gramma to Taya and Tayt and loved them so very much. She always took an active interest in her grandchildren’s lives while in Regina and then travelling to St. Albert to be with them, sharing in their lives and keeping up with their many sports and activities.
Edith was always up for a new adventure. Many lasting friendships were made while ballroom dancing with the Dance Club, ice skating, cycling and walking at the Regina Senior Citizens’ Centre, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing (first attempted at age 60). She was an enthusiastic Saskatchewan Roughrider fan cheering them on in the stands or at home with family and friends. Her love for children and her ability to connect with them was evident in her many years volunteering on the pediatric ward of the Regina General Hospital. She knit baby sweaters and made baby quilts for Lutheran World Relief. For 30 years she never missed an opportunity to walk in The Terry Fox Run.
Many wonderful memories were made in the family’s annual summer camping trip to Penticton, BC; cherry picking, biking, swimming and one Catamaran adventure. Once retired, Edith and Walter loved to travel in Canada, the US, and Europe with numerous trips to Germany, Cuba and Hawaii. She loved interacting with the locals and spent many hours happily gathering seashells at the many beaches along their travels. Once the grandchildren arrived vacations took on a new joy when seen through their eyes, especially in Disney World and Siesta Key.
Edith’s hands and heart were always busy; knitting (including every pair of Walter’s socks), sewing clothes and costumes, quilting, cross stitching and much more. Many happy memories were captured and relived in scrapbooking her life with Walter, her daughters’ early years, her much loved grandchildren, family vacations and reunions of family and school friends. Seldom did we see the top of the dining room table as a jigsaw puzzle was always on the go.
Edith’s smile, easy chatter and sense of humor could brighten your day. Her love of people and life was infectious. Even though she lost her ability to speak following her stroke in 2017, she “spoke” with her many different and sometimes humorous facial expressions. She did not lose her ability to sing and would always love to sing Happy Birthday to you on your special day.
May you look back on all your happy memories of Edith; see her infectious smile, hear her laughter, and feel her unconditional love.
A private family gathering to celebrate Edith’s life will be held at a later date.
